Every year, thousands of children in the United States are injured or killed by dangerous or unsafe toys. The table below shows estimates of toy-related injuries to children in a study conducted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for the years 2001–2005:
| Calendar Year |
Estimated Injuries to Children |
|---|---|
| 2001 | 255,100 |
| 2002 | 212,400 |
| 2003 | 206,500 |
| 2004 | 210,300 |
| 2005 | 202,300 |
These same estimates from CPSC indicate that 75% of all injuries for 2005 were to children under the age of 15. In 2005, about 94,000 injuries (46%) occurred to the heads and faces of children, 47,600 or 24% were to arms, hands, and fingers, and over 35,100 or 17% were injuries to legs and feet. Over 20 children died from toy-related injuries. The most common cause of injury was riding toys, including unpowered scooters, which accounted for 58,400 or 29% of all toy-related injuries in 2005. Reports of injuries from scooters remained a major hazard with over 38,900 injuries associated with scooter use.
